Rad Days: Get some culture, free!
RAD (Regional Asset District) supports and finances regional assets in the areas of libraries, parks and recreation, cultural, sports and civic facilities and programs. The District receives one-half of the proceeds from the 1% Allegheny County Sales and Use Tax. Each fall, RAD Days provides the opportunity to check out some of the area’s best cultural attractions-free of charge! Rad Days started on September 1th and runs through October 24th. Each day of the week, a few different places offer free admission and in some cases, special programming. Look at all the things scheduled for this Saturday, October 2:
Boyce-Mayview Park free admission 9 am – 3 pm
Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall free admission 10 am – 4 pm
Pittsburgh Center for the Arts free admission 10 am – 5 pm

Do you want to be in a movie?
Fourth River Casting is currently working on Warrior, a mixed martial arts movie now shooting in Pittsburgh, and they’re searching for people to play fans in the audience in scenes to be shot at the Petersen Events Center in Oakland. Extras are needed for the following dates:
Friday, May 15th
Saturday, May 16th
Friday, May 22nd
Saturday, May 23rd
Friday, May 29th
Saturday, May 30th
Sunday, June 7th
You would have the option to work from one day up to all seven if desired. Days average 12 hours, can occasionally be shorter, but more often longer, and pay is $100/12 hour, overtime following. If you can use a few hundred extra dollars, provide your name, phone number, and dates you would like to work to Lissa Brennan, Extras Casting Director/Warrior, at 412.232.7050, or email fourthrivercasting@yahoo.com. Lissa says that they need a lot of people, so pass on this information to anyone who may be interested.
An article in today’s Post-Gazette says there have been some instances in which a local company offered people chances at working as extras–for a fee. Casting agents say that this is not exactly illegal, but it is a bit of a scam. There is no need to pay a fee to work as an extra–just contact the casting agent directly.

City of Pittsburgh – Mayor Luke Ravenstahl
MAYOR RAVENSTAHL CALLS FOR PITTSBURGH VALENTINES
Love notes for City will help mark 250th anniversary
To help commemorate our City’s 250th anniversary, the Mayor is asking for your answer to the question: Why do you love Pittsburgh? Over the next three weeks, the answers will be collected, and the Mayor and his staff will be reading the replies.
If you submit one of the final 10 most unique, exciting, romantic or unusual Pittsburgh Valentines, you’ll be invited to a Valentine’s reception with the Mayor!
Starting today, the City of Pittsburgh website will feature a “Pittsburgh Valentines” logo. Click on that logo to tell the Mayor why you love Pittsburgh in 50 words or less.
Mayor Ravenstahl and members of his staff will choose the 10 top reasons from those submitted. The authors of the most unique reasons will be invited to a noontime Valentine reception with the Mayor on Wednesday, Feb 13.
The top 10 reasons selected will also be posted on the City of Pittsburgh website to help commemorate Pittsburgh’s 250th anniversary.
All entries must be received by Friday, Feb 8.
Paczki Day
What is Paczki Day?
Paczki (punch-key) Day is the feast of plenty before the Lenten fast begins. It is the last day of gaiety in Karnawal time, the period between Christmas and Lent. This is the time for sleigh parties called Kulig. To mark the last moments of excess before the austerity of Lenten sacrifice, Polish Roman Catholics celebrate Paczki Day.
