A guest post from Sarah Koenig, a Polish Hill resident who organized this cleanup effort:
Have you ever walked down Gold Way, simultaneously enjoying the unique features of our neighborhood, yet wishing that there was less trash? Now is your chance to help make that happen! The PHCA is pleased to partner with Allegheny Cleanways on Saturday, November 5 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to remove trash and debris from the Gold Way – Melwood Ave section of Polish Hill.
We are seeking volunteers to assist in this effort. Meet under the Bloomfield Bridge at 10:00 a.m. Please wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and water bottles are suggested. We will work together from 10 – 1, rain or shine. Allegheny Cleanways will provide tools and have organized the logistics of removing the trash that we collect. They are an amazing organization and we greatly appreciate their help!
From the Allegheny Cleanways website, a note on how litter relates to the health of our community: “Illegal dumping and littering both degrade communities and our quality of life. Illegal dumping creates significant risks to public health and environmental quality. Litter creates a sense of neglect, reducing property values and inviting property vandalism. Residents and businesses have the power to prevent and eliminate BOTH illegal dumping and litter.”
The graphic above shows the publicly-owned properties in the area that we can legally access. Contact PH.ReddUp@gmail.com for more information. We hope to see you there!
