Onorato Announces Opening of Second Off-Leash Dog Area in North Park

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato today announced the opening of a new off-leash dog area in North Park. The facility is located on Pearce Mill Road across from the ice rink.

“North Park’s new off-leash area is part of our ongoing effort to enhance recreational opportunities and meet the needs of park users,” said Onorato. “Our off-leash areas are very popular, and this new area in North Park will be one of the largest in the region.”

The facility features separate fenced areas for larger dogs and smaller dogs. It also includes a pavilion, 10 picnic tables, and water receptacles for the dogs. There are multiple bag stations for picking up waste.

“This comes as a result of the extensive use of our original off-leash area in North Park,” said Parks Director Andy Baechle. “We will close the first area to allow the ground to rest and the turf to grow back. We will then alternate these areas so that we always have enjoyable and well- maintained off-leash areas for dog lovers.”

The new North Park off-leash area is open to the public daily during normal park hours throughout the year. Plans are being developed for a second off-leash area in South Park as well.
