Curfew Ordinance in effect for children

Please be aware that the city’s Curfew Center is now open and curfew laws will be enforced. Youth 17 and under must abide by the City’s curfew ordinance (#604.01). Officers are not required to issue warnings and may pick up youth on a first offense. The following summary of curfew legislation was compiled by the Pittsburgh Police.

Curfew times:

September 1st thru June 30th:

· Sun – Thurs: 10pm – 6am
· Fri – Sat: 12am – 6am

July 1st thru August 31st:

· Sun – Thurs: 11pm – 6am
· Fri – Sat: 12am – 6am

Exceptions:

(a) This section shall not apply to minors who are:

(1) Accompanied by the minor’s custodian;
(2) On a reasonable errand;
(3) In a motor vehicle involved in interstate travel;
(4) Engaged in an employment activity pursuant to the minor’s custodian’s direction, or going to or returning home from such an employment activity without any detour or stop;
(5) Involved in an emergency;
(6) On the sidewalk abutting the minor’s residence or abutting the residence of a next-door neighbor, with the next-door neighbor’s consent;
(7) Attending an official school, religious, or other recreational activity supervised by adult or sponsored by the City of Pittsburgh or another public body, a civic organization, or other similar entity that takes responsibility for the minor, or going to or returning home from such an activity, without any detour or stop.

(b) This section does not apply to an operator or operator’s agent or employees who promptly notifies a law enforcement agency that a minor is present in the establishment in violation of this section and refuses to leave.

Penalties:

Fine – not more than $300
First and second offenses may be suspended in lieu of 100 hours of community service

The Curfew Center (Safe Haven) located at 200 N. Dithridge Street, will commence operations on 11/4/09 at 22:00 hours. Youths who are cited for violating the City’s curfew ordinance are to be transported to Safe Haven on Sun – Thurs from 22:00-06:00 and Fri – Sat from 24:00-06:00.
